Church Edifice
|
In 1885, one of Mary Baker Eddy's students began the healing practice of Christian Science in Hartford. In 1890, two students of Mrs. Eddy's came to conduct Sunday services in homes. In 1891 the first hall was secured for Christian Science services and by 1896, a Christian Science Society was formed.
On May 11, 1898, the Society moved to organize and incorporate as First Church of Christ, Scientist, Hartford, under a charter granted by the State of Connecticut. This church has continued since then as a branch church of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Boston, Massachusetts.
Our first church home was dedicated in 1908, and was located on Farmington Avenue. The church continued to grow and on the first Sunday in June 1956, services were held in the present church location at 235 Scarborough Street.

Church Auditorium

Each Sunday at 10:30 a.m. a service is held during which hymns are sung by the congregation, a solo is sung, an offertory is taken and a Lesson-sermon is read by lay people who have been elected from the membership.
The sermon consists of a compilation of citations from The King James version of the Bible and the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. These books have been designated as our Pastor by Mrs. Eddy. The Christian Science Quarterly containing the Lesson-Sermon is available in all Christian Science Reading Rooms. The same lesson is heard in all Christian Science churches throughout the world and has been studied throughout the week by many of those who attend.
Child care is provided for those too young to attend the Sunday School or church services and meetings.
On the first Sunday in January and July, a communion service is held in Christian Science branch churches. At this service the congregation is invited to kneel in silent Communion.
Wednesday Evening Testimony Meeting
Every Wednesday evening at 7:30, a meeting is held which includes brief readings compiled by the First Reader from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Hymns are sung by the congregation and testimonies are given by those attending the service who share healings and inspiration they have gained through study and reliance on Christian Science.
Thanksgiving Day Service
Join us for a special service each Thanksgiving Day. This unique service includes readings
from the Bible and Science and Health, hymns, a solo, and period during which anyone in the
congregation may give testimonies appropriate to this special day. This service is held at
10:30 on Thanksgiving morning.
